What is CEDIA?

The Custom Electronic Design & Installation Association (CEDIA) is a global trade association of companies founded in September 1989. CEDIA is a not-for-profit association based in Indianapolis, IN.

CEDIA specializes in planning and installing electronic systems for the home, such as:

Home Networking

Home Automation Systems

Communication Systems

Media Rooms

Single or Multi-Room Entertainment Systems

CEDIA also specializes in integrated whole-house subsystems providing control of:

Lighting

HVAC Systems

Security Systems

Our security systems are designed to incorporate the most user-friendly features available. They arm and disarm with a push-button easily and use plain English messages instead of annoying buzzes or flashing lights.

All houses are wired with 22 gauge 4 conductor alarm wire giving extra wire capability for future expansion.

All accessible doors and opening windows are wired and tied to the security system on individual zones giving precise location description of faulted or activated zones.

Our standard interior motion detectors are pet-friendly for pets up to forty pounds (allowing your pets to move freely about), yet they are still able to detect an intruder’s movement. Motion detectors are located at strategic places through- ought the house thus giving total perimeter and internal protection when the house is unoccupied. (Pet-friendly motion detectors are also available to allow for larger pets)

The security system master control equipment incorporates the newest technology in both protection and false alarm prevention. The system incorporates a complete stand-by battery system for electrical outages, a digital communicator for communication to our central monitoring station, and incorporates automatic diagnostic testing to alert you and our central station of any malfunctions, power outages, low batteries or trouble conditions.

We incorporate both inside and outside sirens for notification of alarm activations.

On houses with fire sprinklers, we monitor the water flow valve to alert you and our central station should water start to flow in order to get immediate help and determine if fire department assistance is required.

We also install smoke detectors that are tied into the security system thus alerting you and our central station if smoke should be detected in the house.

CEDIA Helps You Make Informed Decisions

If you are confused by the consumer electronics age, CEDIA offers 10 smart consumer electronic tips for your home environment. This concise and informative list of helpful hints will assist you in making smart decisions when purchasing home consumer electronics.

CEDIA developed this list of recommendations after many hours of collaboration between our members. Members of CEDIA are knowledgeable and talented professionals representing all facets of the industry, from designers/installers to manufacturers and sales representatives.

Our goal for developing this list was to take an active role in assisting the consumer. These tips cover four areas: innovation, investments, integration, and ease of use.

Although this advice is geared toward the consumer, it also benefits the custom electronics professional. When building or remodeling, the designer or builder may use this list as a reference for recommending home integration to their customer.

10 Smart Consumer Electronic Tips

1. Wire for Everything Now

If you are building or remodeling your home, wire it with a plan for future needs. While no one can guarantee what the future will look like, CEDIA professionals make it their business to stay current to offer sound advice about technologies that are on the horizon. Best of all, they can help you sort out the hype from the reality.

2. Plan for High-Definition TV Now

HDTV is the new digital standard for enhanced picture quality for TV broadcasting. If you’re buying a new TV or video projector, make sure you’ll be able to enjoy the incredible sound and pictures that are part of HDTV.

3. Insist on Integrated Systems

As you buy new electronic components, shop for equipment that can be hooked up together and operated with one easy-to-use control system.

4. Don’t Buy Yesterday’s Products (Often What is in Stock)

Many stores purchase large orders of all equipment and sell it at discounted rates. Shop with a dealer that only provides you with new equipment and technologies.

5. Integrate Lighting Control with Your Home Electronics System

Lighting sets the mood for home theater, entertaining, or just a quiet night at home. You can control your home lighting from the same remote you use to control your theater or music system.

6. Think with Your Wallet, but Lead with Your Head

Quality and long-term dependability are the most cost-effective attributes you can build into a home.

7. Buy an Experience, Not a Box

Find a dealer who allows you to test drive the entire system or at least experience the thrill of a high-performance system. Few people have the time to research and evaluate all the hardware choices. It’s smarter to focus on the result and choose based on overall performance and value.

8. Don’t Put Up with Complicated, Multiple Remote Controls

Easy-to-use, all-in-one remote controls are available for any system. You can even have them custom-programmed so they make perfect sense to you.

9. Consult a Professional

Designing and installing reliable, easy-to-use systems that add real quality to your lifestyle is the goal of CEDIA professionals. Check if the company you’re considering has CEDIA-certified professional designers and installers on staff.

10. Increase Your Service Expectations

Your home electronics system is a big investment. CEDIA professionals will provide extensive options, comprehensive designs, complete installation, and especially in-home service for your systems. CEDIA professionals ensure your dollars are invested well while focusing on the design, integration, and installation.
